On April 9, 2011, LOPE is hosting a one-day SHOT ("Stock Horse of Texas") clinic at the Diamond F Arena in Seguin, TX.
We are especially excited about this clinic! At LOPE, we're always learning more about horsemanship so that we can help the ex-racehorses here better prepare for new careers. And we have been very impressed with SHOT’s emphasis on horsemanship in its competitions and clinics.
The core of the SHOT program is education -- for both the horse and rider. At their one-day clinics, they especially focus on creating a pleasant and low-key learning environment for all types of equestrians and all levels of horses. We think the combination of reining, pleasure, cow work and trail/obstacle is especially good for horses. Each type of activity helps the horse learn how to become more versatile, relaxed and athletic.
Laurie Shelton, the SHOT 2010 Open Champion, puts it well:
"The whole point of SHOT is about riding the horse you have, that every horse and rider can improve -- and why not put some purpose behind those improvements? It’s not about encouraging folks to go buy some show-ready horse -- instead, it’s about improving what you've got and having fun while doing it."
The clinic on April 9 will be unusually well staffed, with eight top SHOT clinicians (two per class). Judging from the sign-ups so far, there will be a fun mix of riders and horses from different disciplines (everything from dressage to cutting to pleasure riding). The venue has a wonderful trail/obstacle course, a covered arena and a concession stand. Cost of the clinic is very reasonable -- $65 for SHOT members, $90 for non-members (which includes membership in SHOT). Pre-registration is due by April 5.
