My OTTB loves to trail ride!We go everywhere:camping at the coast,Bandera,Canyon Lake. He's the coolest customer out there....and he's 4.He power-walks to the front of the line, and has to be the lead horse!Hey,old habits are hard to break, right? He has never offered to kick once, even when another rider accidentally runs their horse up behind us.He only balks when we flush deer out of the brush, and,as a girlfriend put it,"If you're going to be on a horse that spooks, you want to be on Grand! He spooks in place and never runs away!" A truly magnificent, kind, willing partner. That's my boy!

"And that the Texas-bred racehorses are often especially kind and easy to work with (due to their ranch-raised childhoods and good foundations under saddle)"
Makes a big difference when they get good fundamentals in their early years. Sets them up for success in racing and other careers. They transition so much easier and safer.

"...it seems that their outreach efforts might need to include educating some of their own leadership."
A good point about any awareness campaign. It needs to target not only the general public but also thoroughbred owners at all levels.

Thanks for being one of the best advocates for OTTBs they could ask for:) Of course, I always say the horses themselves are the best advocates, but they need kind, knowledgable people like you to speak for them:)

I took my OTTB out on his first trail ride ever the other day-he never put a foot wrong or was the least bit afraid. He marched forward with purpose and was sure footed through all the mud we've had to deal with. I think he will give most Quarter Horses a run for their money in the trail department eventually:)
